Adeosun, Adesola Oluwaropo Maize Production Technology Southwestern Nigeria xiii,132 pages The study identified the innovations in maize production in Southwestern Nigeria. It further determined the impact of the innovations on maize production and assessed the factors influencing the use of the innovations among the maize farmers in the study area. This was with a view to determining the effect of agricultural innovations on the output of maize farmers. The study covered 150 maize farmers from four purposively selected maize producing states in Southwestern Nigeria. These were Oyo, Osun, Ogun, and Ekiti states where 46, 29, 31, and 44 farmers respectively were randomly sampled for the study. Questionnaires were used to collect data from the farmers. This consisted of structured and unstructured questions which elicited information on the use of technological innovations in maize production among the sampled farmers. Secondary data were collected from State Agricultural Development Programme offices in the states. The result showed that majority (64.67%) of the farmers carried out innovations in all the states sampled. These included planting of improved seed variety, reduced planting space, camouflaged spraying of poisoned seed, planting of cover crops and selective application of atrazine powder. The main reason why farmers carried out innovations was to increase the volume of harvest. The greatest impact of innovation on maize farming was improvement in the yield of the farmers compared to increase of farming capacity, improvement in profit and improvement in capital across the states. Factors influencing the use of innovations among maize farmers included increased land space, increased volume of harvest, increased harvest per land size, solved yield damage problem, the farmer’s highest level of education, the size of the farmer’s maize farm, years of the farmer’s experience, farmers’ capital, and nature of farming (full time or part time). About 43.75% of the respondents were carrying out innovations to increase their volume of harvest. Spearman’s correlation of the factors influencing innovations showed that there was a negative interaction between the level of farmers’ education and their usage of innovation. Educated farmers were conservative at deploying innovations. Being a part time farmer also had a negative relationship with using innovations, but the number of years of the farmers’ experience and the size of the maize farm were significant factors influencing use of innovation.
