Ekundayo, Opeyemi Oyewunmi Sexual behaviour University undergraduates Psychosocial Neuroticism Conscientiousness xv, 184p The study determined the influence of personality traits (agreeableness, openness, neuroticism, conscientiousness, and extraversion) on undergraduates’ sexual behaviour. It ascertained the influence of locus of control on undergraduates’ sexual behaviour, examined the influence of impulsivity on undergraduates’ sexual behaviour, and, determined the influence of age, family background and peer pressure on undergraduates’ sexual behaviour. This is with a view to understanding the psychosocial factors that could determine the sexual behaviour of University Undergraduates in Southwestern Nigeria. Primary data were used in the study. The study was a cross-sectional survey that employed a multi-stage sampling procedure in which respondents were selected systematically at different levels and stages. Three states (Ekiti, Osun and Lagos) were randomly selected from Southwestern Nigeria. From each States, one public and one private University were purposively selected. Eighty undergraduates were randomly selected from each of the three selected public universities while forty undergraduates were randomly selected from the three selected private universities; based on the variation in their student’s population respectively. A total number of 1080 respondents were selected from the six selected universities. Four undergraduates each were also purposively selected from the 6 universities for interview. Questionnaire and in-depth interview were used to elicit information on personality traits, locus of control, impulsivity, family background, peer pressure and sexual behaviour among undergraduates in Southwestern Nigeria. Four standardized scales were used for the study; these include Big-Five Personality Inventory, Rotter’s Internal-External Locus of Control Scale, Impulsive Behaviour Scale and the Sexual Behaviour Inventory. The quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics, t-test and ANCOVA while the qualitative data were coded and analysed using Atlas-ti. The result showed that personality traits (agreeableness (t = 1.68, p <0.05), openness (t = 2.27, p <0.05), neuroticism (t = 2.91, p <0.05) had significant influence on the sexual behaviour of undergraduates in Southwestern Nigeria. It also showed that locus of control (t = 3.23, p <0.05) and impulsivity (t = 6.04, p <0.05) had significant influence on the sexual behaviour of undergraduates in Southwestern Nigeria. Family type and peer pressure have an intervening effect on the influence of personality traits (F = 2.10, p < 0.05), locus of control (F = 3.51, p < 0.05) and impulsivity (F = 1.37, p < 0.05) on the sexual behaviour of undergraduates. Age has intervening effect on the influence of impulsivity (F = 18.20, p < 0.05) and locus of control (F = 6.84, p <0.05) on the sexual behaviour of undergraduates. The study concluded that agreeableness, openness, neuroticism, locus of control and impulsivity had influence on the sexual behaviour of undergraduates in Southwestern Nigeria. Also, family type and peer pressure had intervening effect on the influence of personality trait, locus of control and impulsivity on the sexual behaviour of undergraduates.
