Akande, Saheed Abiodun Smart home System Communication Mobile Phones Home appliances Computer xii,189 pages Smart home system is an integration of electrical appliances at home which is coordinated by smart home controller and controlled by users using computer, mobile phone etc. This project developed a smart home system using the power line as communication channel between main controlling unit and client units. The designed system consists of hardware and software components. The hardware part consists of the SIM900, Arduino Uno, Atmega 328 and ST7540 modem. The SIM900 receives SMS messages from the owner and the Arduino Uno converts the messages into serial communication input for the master controller Atmega 328. The message is processed by the master controller and forwarded to the power line communication modem (PLCM), ST7540. The ST7540 modulates the signal to produce an FSK signal. The signal is sends to the coupling circuit. The coupling circuit links low d.c voltage to high voltage a.c power line network and also remove noise and attenuation that can distort the signal. At the receiving end, the PLCM demodulates the signal, sends the signal to the microcontroller which decodes the command and perform the necessary action. The reverse of this action occurs to notify user of the action performed. In the software part, C-programming language was used to program Atmega 328 and ST7540 to accomplish the integration of the system. After the construction, SMS messages were sent to control the device to know how efficient it works. The results showed seventy percent of the trials to control appliances were successful. It showed how FSK had immunity to noise, thus reducing attenuation of the message at the receiving end. Computer and mobile phone were used to send SMS messages to control appliances.
